Chassis check and maintenance

Many damaging forces act on a car’s chassis out on the road, and it is under constant load from uneven road surfaces, wear of the chassis components, hitting kerbs and much more.

There are many vulnerable elements underneath a car, from the fuel hoses and the sump through to the bushings and the exhaust system. It is therefore advisable to have the chassis and the underside of your car checked regularly.

Carstop workshops include the following among their maintenance services

Brake system check and maintenance
Alignment rig and wheel alignment
Checking and replacing shock absorbers and springs
Tyre changing and balancing
Replacing bushings, joints and track rod ends
Other possible work

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

Squeaking or grinding noises
If audible noises come from the direction of the brakes, it usually means the brake pads are worn and need replacing.
The car judders or vibrates when braking
If you feel unusual vibration when braking, it often means the brake disc(s) are warped and need replacing.
The car does not brake as effectively, or the brake pedal feels soft
If this happens, the car should be checked as soon as possible — otherwise you may one day find yourself driving with brakes that no longer work.

What is a chassis check?
During a chassis check, Carstop technicians thoroughly inspect your car's suspension, shock absorbers, bushings, joints and bearings to ensure the vehicle's stability and safety and even tyre wear.
How long does the check take?
A visual and mechanical check of the chassis and its components usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. If faults are found that require immediate repair, the exact working time is agreed separately.
When should the chassis be checked?
We recommend coming in for a check as soon as you hear suspicious knocking or rattling while driving, the car pulls to one side, or the steering wheel vibrates. As a preventive measure it is sensible to have the chassis inspected every spring and autumn before wheel alignment
Is wheel alignment carried out during the check as well?
No — a chassis check is a precondition for wheel alignment. Wheel alignment can only be performed on a chassis that is 100% sound and free of play. If no faults are found during the check, you can move straight on to alignment on the rig.
