Fault codes and electrical work

The electronics in a modern car form a complex network in which sensor faults or wiring problems can affect everything from how the engine runs to the comfort systems. When a warning light comes on in the dashboard or an electrical accessory plays up, the first step is professional computer diagnostics and fault code reading. At Carstop workshops we use modern equipment to identify faults in the electronic systems and carry out a wide range of vehicle electrical work. Whether it is replacing a faulty sensor, repairing broken wiring or fitting accessories, our specialists restore the reliability of your car’s electronics.

Carstop workshops include the following among their maintenance services

Scanning the car's control units and reading, analysing and clearing fault codes (DTC)
Wiring repair, elimination of short circuits and replacement of sensors and relays
Diagnostics and repair of starting and charging systems (starters and alternators)

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

A warning light is on in the dashboard, or an electrical accessory does not work
The main warning sign is a Check Engine, ABS, SRS (airbag) or other warning light coming on, indicating that the car's computer has detected an electronic fault. It is also worth coming in for a check if the electric windows, central locking, lights or wipers work erratically, cut out from time to time or repeatedly blow fuses, which points to a short circuit or a faulty control unit.

Why is clearing the fault code with a diagnostic tool not enough to repair the car?
Clearing a fault code with a diagnostic computer only removes the notification from the car's memory — it does not repair the actual physical fault. If the fault code is caused by a broken sensor, a corroded connector or a chafed wire, the car's electronic control unit will detect the fault again at the very next start or drive, and the warning light will come back on. Carstop's electrical work involves identifying the real cause of the fault and repairing it mechanically, to deliver long-term reliability.
