Trailer maintenance

Regular trailer maintenance keeps it running safely and smoothly on the road and prevents unexpected breakdowns. Because trailers are frequently exposed to damp, sand and heavy loads, their vital wearing parts — such as wheel bearings, brakes, electrical connections and tyres — need periodic inspection and lubrication. At Carstop workshops we carry out professional trailer maintenance, including a full inspection of the running gear, identification of play and lubrication work. Timely maintenance ensures a long service life for your trailer, saves the tyres from uneven wear and ensures it passes its roadworthiness test.

Carstop workshops include the following among their maintenance services

Visual and mechanical inspection of the trailer's axles, leaf springs, shock absorbers and bushings
Checking wheel bearing play, greasing the coupling head, adjusting the brakes and renewing wearing parts
Checks to keep the wiring, connectors and lights working, plus corrosion protection for the connections

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

The trailer has stood unused for a long time, or the official roadworthiness test date is approaching
Trailers tend to develop faults when standing for long periods (especially over autumn and winter) — moisture that has collected in the drum can rust the brake shoes solid, the wheel bearing grease ages and the light connectors corrode. Periodic maintenance before the start of the season or before the test ensures the trailer is 100% ready for the road and safe.

What does maintenance of a trailer's coupling head and braking system involve, and why is it necessary?
A trailer's coupling head (the tow bar attachment point) and overrun brake system contain moving parts and dampers that need regular greasing through dedicated nipples. An unmaintained, dry coupling head starts knocking loudly while driving, wears the tow ball on the car and slows the response of the brakes. At Carstop we clean and grease the system, ensuring the trailer runs smoothly and quietly behind the car.
