Spark plug and glow plug replacement

Correctly working plugs are the basis of smooth engine starting and an efficient combustion process, directly affecting your car’s fuel consumption and emission levels. Petrol engines need spark plugs to create the ignition spark, while diesel engines rely on glow plugs to preheat the combustion chamber for cold starting. Worn or faulty plugs cause rough running, loss of power, excessive load on the battery and starter, and in severe cases the car will not start at all. At Carstop workshops we carry out professional plug diagnostics and replacement, ensuring clean combustion and reliable starting in any weather.

Carstop workshops include the following among their maintenance services

Replacement of diesel engine glow plugs and relays
Inspection and replacement of petrol engine spark plugs and ignition coils
Electronic ignition system diagnostics and fault code reading

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

The diesel engine is hard to start in cold weather, or the glow plug light flashes on the dashboard
If the outside temperature drops and the diesel engine needs long cranking to start, runs unevenly at first (misfires) or blows white smoke from the exhaust, one or more glow plugs are faulty. The distinctive coil-shaped glow plug light staying on or flashing on the dashboard is also a direct indication of this.
The petrol engine misfires, stutters, or fuel consumption has risen
Worn spark plugs in a petrol engine can no longer produce a spark strong enough to ignite the fuel mixture. This causes running problems, hesitation under acceleration, the Check Engine light coming on because of incorrect sensor readings, and a noticeable rise in fuel consumption caused by unburnt fuel.

Why does glow plug replacement demand particular care and long experience from the mechanic?
Diesel glow plugs work in extreme heat and tend to seize or rust into the cylinder head thread over the years. Because the plugs are long and fragile by design, using the wrong force or the wrong tool can snap a plug off in the thread. Carstop specialists use special penetrating chemicals and torque wrenches to remove seized plugs without damaging the cylinder head.
What happens if faulty glow plugs or spark plugs are not replaced in time?
Postponing plug replacement causes premature battery drain and starter wear from prolonged cranking. On diesel engines, incomplete combustion rapidly clogs the particulate filter (DPF) and the EGR valve. On petrol engines, fuel left unburnt in the cylinder can pass straight into the exhaust and permanently burn out the expensive catalytic converter.
