Timing belt and chain replacement

The timing belt and chain ensure precise, synchronised operation between the engine’s valve train and its pistons. Because these components are under constant mechanical and thermal load, every car manufacturer specifies a fixed time- or mileage-based service interval for them. A snapped belt, or a chain that has stretched and jumped a tooth, causes the valves and pistons to collide, ending in catastrophic engine failure. At Carstop workshops we carry out professional replacement of timing belts and chains using dedicated locking tools and full kits that meet factory requirements, ensuring safe, long-lasting operation of your car’s engine.

Carstop workshops include the following among their maintenance services

Brand-specific replacement of timing belt kits and timing chains
Renewal of the coolant pump (water pump), rollers and tensioners
Post-replacement valve timing check and electronic engine setup

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

The manufacturer's mileage/time interval is approaching, or the engine makes unusual noises when starting and driving
A timing belt is replaced strictly on mileage (usually 90,000–180,000 km) or age (usually 5–6 years), as the rubber compound ages even while standing. A timing chain should last longer, but a stretched chain or worn tensioner is signalled by a distinctive metallic rattle on cold start, uneven idling, the Check Engine light coming on because of incorrect timing, or visible micro-cracks and oil traces on the ancillary belts.

Why is it mandatory to replace the water pump and rollers during a belt change, and what happens if it is postponed?
The timing belt runs over guide and tensioner rollers and on many models also drives the water pump. Because a new belt is under considerably higher tension, an old water pump or roller with an already worn bearing is quickly damaged under the new load — if the water pump seizes or a roller breaks up, the timing belt jumps off or snaps in a second, resulting in an engine overhaul costing thousands of euros. At Carstop we always replace the complete factory kit (belt, rollers, tensioner and water pump) together with fresh coolant, to guarantee full system reliability for the next long service interval.
