Replacing oils and filters

Regular oil changes at the right intervals are the single most important basis for a long-lasting, smoothly running engine. Because a running engine turns thousands of times a minute, quality oil reduces friction between components and helps cool the system. Over time the oil ages and collects dirt, losing its lubricating properties. At Carstop we carry out fast, professional oil changes using quality oils and filters approved by your car’s manufacturer, to prevent expensive engine failures.

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

The oil warning light or service reminder comes on in the dashboard
Newer cars calculate the service interval dynamically and warn you in good time when an oil change is due. A red or yellow oil can warning light, however, indicates critically low oil level or pressure, in which case the engine must be switched off immediately.
The recommended mileage has passed, or a year has gone by since the last service
If your car has no automatic reminder, keep an eye on the mileage — an oil change is usually carried out every 10,000 to 20,000 km. Even if you drive very little, oil loses its properties while standing, so for older cars the golden rule is to change the oil at least once a year.

What happens, and what are the risks, if the oil change is not done on time?
Oil left unchanged for too long becomes too dirty and thick and loses its ability to lubricate. This causes greater friction between engine parts, loss of power and overheating. In the worst case engine components can seize or break, ending in a full engine overhaul or complete replacement.
Why must the oil filter always be replaced during an oil change?
The oil filter traps the metal particles, combustion residues and soot that form in the engine. If the filter is not replaced it quickly clogs, and dirty oil then circulates past it through the bypass valve — cancelling out the point of adding fresh, clean oil and damaging the engine.
