How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

Gears will not engage, they "slip", or the transmission goes into limp mode
If a manual transmission is hard to put into gear, or an automatic starts revving up under acceleration without moving (slipping), there is serious wear. In the event of a major sensor or hydraulic fault, the car's computer switches the transmission into limp mode to protect it, limiting the gears available
Loud whining, droning or knocking while driving or when changing gear
Unusual mechanical noises around the transmission usually point to wear in the internal bearings, gears or differential. When symptoms like these appear the car must be brought in for a check immediately, as breaking metal particles can irreversibly destroy the entire transmission casing from the inside.

Does a faulty transmission always have to be replaced with a completely new one?
Generally not. In most cases transmission faults can be partly repaired. Carstop specialists open the unit, identify the specific worn components (such as bearings, seals, clutch plates or electronic modules) and replace them with new ones — a considerably cheaper solution for the customer than buying a new transmission.
What are the main reasons car transmissions fail?
The most common cause is servicing that has not been done on time and the resulting low or contaminated oil level, which causes components to overheat and creates excessive friction. Transmission life is also affected by an aggressive driving style, constant driving in demanding conditions (such as overloading vans) and natural mechanical wear over time.
