Transmission replacement

When a car’s transmission has suffered extensive mechanical damage, has broken internally, or when repairing it is no longer economically sensible, the best solution is to replace the transmission completely. At Carstop workshops we carry out professional replacement of both manual and automatic transmissions, offering a new, remanufactured or inspected used replacement unit to suit your vehicle. Our mechanics guarantee precise, technically correct installation, electronic programming and filling with fresh oil, so your car is back on the road as quickly and safely as possible.

Carstop workshops include the following among their maintenance services

Removal of the faulty transmission and complete installation of a new or remanufactured unit
Replacement of the clutch kit, flywheel, shaft seals and mounting bushes
Post-installation electronic setup, adaptation and test drive

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

The car will not move at all, or the transmission is completely locked up
If the transmission has suffered severe mechanical damage (for example the internal gears or shafts have broken), the car can no longer engage any gear or transfer engine power to the wheels. In this situation driving, and often even towing, is impossible, and a full transmission replacement is required.
Diagnostics reveals irreversible transmission damage, or the casing is leaking badly
If a mechanical impact has cracked the transmission casing, or the internal electronic and hydraulic assemblies have melted completely through overheating, repair will no longer deliver results. A terminal fault confirmed by our specialists means the vehicle can only be made roadworthy again by fitting a new unit.

When replacing a transmission, is it better to fit a new, remanufactured or used unit?
The choice depends on the age of the car and your budget. A brand new factory unit is the most dependable but often also the most expensive solution. Very popular and reasonably priced alternatives are professionally remanufactured transmissions or inspected used units supplied with a warranty, which deliver long-term reliability at a considerably lower cost.
What additional work is always carried out during a transmission replacement?
While the transmission is being replaced we strongly recommend inspecting and, if necessary, replacing the clutch kit, the flywheel and the transmission mounts, as these are freely accessible at that point. The new transmission is also always filled with fresh oil matching the manufacturer's specification, and the necessary electronic setup with the car's computer is carried out.
