DPF filter check and replacement

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps particles that are harmful to health, but short city journeys and age tend to clog it. A warning light on the dashboard, loss of performance and limp mode all signal that the filter is full. Carstop offers modern DPF diagnostics, professional machine cleaning that restores up to around 98% of the filter’s flow capacity, and, where necessary, fitting of a new quality particulate filter.

Carstop workshops include the following among their maintenance services

Diagnostics of DPF filter saturation and sensors
Professional flushing and cleaning of the particulate filter
DPF filter replacement and programming of the new filter
Starting a forced regeneration with diagnostic equipment
Checking and replacing pressure and temperature sensors

How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

The DPF warning light comes on or the car goes into limp mode
When the particulate filter fills to a critical level and the car cannot burn it off by itself during motorway driving, a warning light appears on the dashboard. To protect the engine, the car often limits power and switches to limp mode.
The engine has lost performance and fuel consumption has increased
A blocked filter creates strong back pressure on the exhaust gases. The engine struggles to push the gases out, which makes acceleration noticeably more sluggish and increases fuel consumption.
The car frequently runs failed burn-off cycles (regeneration)
If you notice the car holding high idle revs, the cooling fan running constantly and an unusual smell from the exhaust, the car is repeatedly trying to clean the filter. If this fails because of short journeys, the filter will eventually block completely.

Is it always worth cleaning a blocked DPF filter?
Yes, cleaning is the first and most affordable step. Specialist machine washing removes the accumulated ash and soot from the filter and restores up to around 98% of its flow capacity, provided the filter has not melted internally or broken.
How long does the particulate filter cleaning process take?
At Carstop, full DPF diagnostics, removal, machine washing, drying and refitting usually take from a few hours up to one working day. You can collect the car the same day.
How can frequent clogging of the particulate filter be avoided in future?
To extend the life of the DPF, avoid driving only short city journeys. The car regularly needs a longer motorway run at a steady speed (roughly every 500 km) so that the engine reaches the temperature required for regeneration and burns the soot to ash itself.
