How to recognise when you should bring your car in for a check

A loud or rattling noise while driving
A rusting muffler or leaks in the pipework noticeably raise the noise level. A rattling, knocking or loud droning sound from under the car points to a hole in the muffler or loose mountings, which need immediate repair or welding.
The engine warning light or the DPF filter warning comes on
A blocked particulate filter (DPF) prevents exhaust gases from escaping freely. This causes a loss of power (limp mode), increased fuel consumption, and can seriously damage the engine and the turbocharger.
A smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin or around the car
A sharp smell of fuel or gas indicates a leak in the front section of the exhaust system or a failed catalytic converter. This is a health hazard, as harmful combustion gases can enter the cabin through the ventilation system.

Why is a check needed before the roadworthiness test?
Emissions are measured very strictly at the roadworthiness test. A blocked DPF, a worn catalytic converter or a leaking muffler means failing the test. A Carstop pre-check lets you fix the faults more cheaply and in good time before the test.
Does a blocked DPF filter always have to be replaced?
No — in most cases professional cleaning with specialist equipment is enough to restore the filter to working order. Fitting a new filter is only necessary if the DPF has melted internally or is physically broken.
What happens if a catalytic converter fault is ignored?
A blocked catalytic converter creates back pressure on the engine, making acceleration sluggish and increasing fuel consumption. A system left unrepaired for a long time can cause the engine to overheat and lead to expensive additional faults.
